Bio
Kelly M. Stec is a member of Plunkett Cooney's Government Relations, Public Policy & Regulatory Practice Group. In her role as a regulatory compliance advisor, Ms. Stec works with public- and private-sector clients across a range of industries to achieve their public policy goals, to create lasting relationships with Michigan government officials and to ensure compliance with state regulations.
Ms. Stec is a former chief of staff and legislative director for a past member of both the Michigan House of Representatives and Senate, and she has built extensive relationships with stakeholders, constituents and coalitions in these roles. Ms. Stec has also held positions in the education and nonprofit sectors, where she focused on gender-based violence prevention, early childhood education and special education assessment. Since 2021, Ms. Stec has served as Mayor Pro Tempore for the city of Wyandotte.
Ms. Stec, who works in the firm's Lansing office, has a thorough understanding of Michigan's legislative process, having researched and developed new legislation. Notable highlights of legislation Ms. Stec helped make law include the bipartisan 2017 unemployment reform package, updating state laws around HIV testing, the 2023 state-level ACA codification, legislation to protect living organ donors from insurance denial and Teddy’s Law, which requires animals used in laboratory testing to be offered up for adoption following their use in research.
